Place What's Possible Activity
by Peri Green
Meet Aiden, a middle school student living in Antville who loves school and enjoys visiting museums and skating outside of school. Aiden's parents are considering a move to Turtle Town, known for its great opportunities for kids, particularly for activities outside of school. Curious about what new adventures await in Turtle Town, Aiden decides to create maps of both Antville and Turtle Town to compare the places and landscapes of each neighborhood and understand how their lifestyle might change. Aiden is particularly interested in "third spaces" or places where they can engage in activities outside of school.
To analyze the opportunities in each neighborhood, Aiden comes up with a list of action verbs representing different activities: play, learn, practice, relax, volunteer, and more. Your task is to explore Aiden's maps of Antville and Turtle Town, using Aiden's action verbs to mark the different activities kids can engage in across both neighborhoods. As you tag places with actions, an action counter will update, showing the level of out-of-school opportunities in each neighborhood. Once you have finished exploring both maps, compare the action counters to determine which neighborhood offers richer out-of-school opportunities. Your analysis will help Aiden and their parents make an informed decision about their potential move and provide you with insights into how different environments support diverse lifestyles and activities for youth.
Your Turn! Now that you have a better understanding of the different opportunities that neighborhoods can provide based on existing infrastructure, personal desires & interests, and transportation options, you will use Lynx Logo to construct a reimagined neighborhood map and fill it with desired places linked to action verbs that you will also create.
